History of Wandoor Block Panchayath
The Wandoor Block Panchayat region is a land deeply associated with the Indian freedom struggle and the activities of brave patriots. Situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats and home to the ecologically rich Silent Valley, this area lies at an altitude of approximately 200–300 feet above sea level.
At present, the Block Panchayat comprises 11 revenue villages—Mampad, Pullippadam, Thrikkalangode, Karakkunnu, Elankur, Thiruvali, Vandoor, Porur, Pandikkad, Vettikkattiri, and Chembrasseri—spread across six Grama Panchayats: Pandikkad, Porur, Vandoor, Mampad, Thrikkalangode, and Thiruvali.
The block area is generally fertile, as it is enriched by three rivers—Chaliyar, Kuthirappuzha, and Olippuzha—along with numerous streams and associated wetland ecosystems. Covering an area of 318.97 square kilometres, the region possesses diverse soil types. Since the industrial sector in the block has not achieved significant growth, economic development in the area remains largely dependent on agriculture.
According to the 2011 Census, the population of the Block Panchayat is 353,704, comprising 169,576 males and 184,128 females. The majority of the population consists of farmers, agricultural labourers, and wage workers.
The Block Panchayat has achieved remarkable success in implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) during the 2025–26 plan period.
Notable achievements under the scheme include the renovation and conservation of ponds and streams, laying of coir geotextiles, construction of check dams, wells, roads, and anganwadis, as well as the creation of individual assets such as cattle sheds, goat sheds, poultry sheds, SHG work sheds, playgrounds, and kitchen sheds in schools.
