History
The Wandoor Block Panchayat region is a historic land marked by the national freedom struggle and the sacrifices of brave patriots. Nestled in the foothills of the Silent Valley – Western Ghats mountain ranges, a treasure trove of biodiversity, this area lies approximately 200 to 300 feet above sea level. Currently, this block panchayat encompasses 11 revenue villages (Mambad, Pullipadam, Trikkalangode, Karakkunnu, Elankur, Thiruvali, Wandoor, Porur, Pandikkad, Vettikattiri, and Chembrassery) across 6 Grama Panchayats: Pandikkad, Porur, Wandoor, Mambad, Trikkalangode, and Thiruvali. Comprising three rivers—Chaliyar, Kuthirappuzha, and Olippuzha—along with numerous small and large streams and their corresponding watershed areas, this block region is generally fertile. Covering an area of 318.97 square kilometers, the region features diverse soil types. Since the industrial sector has not achieved sufficient growth in the block area, the economic development remains closely tied to the agricultural sector.
According to the 2011 Census records, the population of the Block Panchayat, which consists of farmers, agricultural laborers, and daily wage earners, is 3,53,704, comprising 1,69,576 males and 1,84,128 females.
The Block Panchayat achieved outstanding success under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) during the 2025–26 project period.
Notable achievements include the conservation of ponds and streams, laying of coir geotextiles, construction of check dams, wells, roads, and Anganwadis, as well as the creation of individual assets such as cattle sheds, goat shelters, poultry sheds, SHG work sheds, playgrounds, and school kitchen sheds.
